New York Unified Court System - List of Statutes of Limitations
For any lawsuit, there are certain filing deadlines (statutes of limitations) that must be met. If a lawsuit is not filed by these deadlines, claimants forever lose their right to pursue the matter in court. These deadlines are based on the type of case (negligence, contract, etc.) These deadlines differ by jurisdiction. The statute of limitations for motor vehicle accidents in New York is three (3) years. In New Jersey, it is only two (2) years. The New York Unified Court System provides a summary of statutes of limitations under New York Laws on its website - New York Courts - Statutes of Limitations .
