November 2024 Cruise Ship Encounters Severe Weather Shortly after departing Spain and heading for Florida, the Royal Carribean International (RCI) cruise ship Explorer of the Seas was hit by gusts of wind near Tenerife that approached hurricane force. This caused the 138,000-ton cruise ship to experience rolling that caused objects to slide and spill. One of the cruise ship's passengers was injured in the accident and was scheduled to be disembarking at Las Palmas. The video to the right provides some footage of the accident aboard the 1,020-foot cruise ship - Breaking News: Explorer of the Seas Hit Hurricane Force Winds. Explorer of the Seas is post-Panamax Voyager-class cruise ship. Although large cruise ships enjoy a measure of protection against severe sea conditions by virtue of their size, it's also true that their considerable height and length also result in a large windage surface exposed to the elements. We hope for the best for all passengers and crew aboard the vessel in enjoying a safe voyage home. More details about the accident appear at Maritime Executive.
